| December 2006. Pineapples in Antigua, West Indies is affected by an unknown disease. Looking at the symptoms, it appears that the plants are affected by mealybug wilt. This is a virus disease, which is transmitted by mealybugs that are hidden near the base of the plant. Ants often carry the mealybugs from plant to plant. Another transmission is by planting material taken from diseased plants. Recommendations for control mainly concern the control of ants and mealybugs.
Although it was thought that mealybug wilt was a likely candidate, another possibility was nematodes. Both the reniform and the lesion nematodes cause similar symptoms. The roots and soil of the affected plants should be assesyed. These two nematodes cause severe decline of pineapple in the Caribbean, Hawaii and North Queensland. |
