January 2003. A serious condition has affected Anthurium growing on a farm in St Lucia, West Indies. In a plot of approximately 1000 plants, 60% are affected. The variety affected is a hybrid and mainly the white ones are affected. There is also a new planting and all the plantlets are showing the same condition. The weather last week was mainly fair with a few light showers, temperatures 26-300 C).
It was thought the condition was caused by Dasheen mosaic potyvirus, although thrips or mites are also a possibility.
