Pests Pests Entities Other mammals Mongoose introduction, traps, Samoa

December 2009. A request for information from Samoa after a possible sighting of a mongoose. The Samoan National Invasives Task Team (SNITT) have good reason to believe that a mongoose has arrived in Samoa and has been spotted in the Aleipata area. It may have come in with construction materials (e.g. pipes) being used for the new wharf/landing at Satitoa. The animal was said to have even been seen prior to the tsunami but was not reported. The Team is planning to search, capture and kill the animal. Can anyone suggest suitable traps?
If small animal traps are not available then rattraps can be used. Bait a poison mixed with sausage/fish meat – this way you may have effect if the bait is taken and the trap is not sprung.
