| August 2005. Papua New Guinea asked for the identification of a snail on Balsa in a nursery. It feeds on the stems (3 days after germination) and causes severe damage. How can it be controlled?
It was identified as Subulina octona.
As for control, metaldahyde baits are the best option. Another option is to apply one of the copper based fungicides such as Kocide, Copper Nordox, Bordeaux, etc. Slugs and snails are generally very susceptible to copper poisoning. A rate recommended to control common leaf diseases on tree crops would be worth trying.
