July 2010. Two moths, collected from forest plants in the north of Vietnam were sent for identification.
The first moth (photo, left) is an Ericeia sp., probably E subcinerea, though there are several similar species and it’s much easier to identify them from the ventral wing pattern. See http://www.hkwildlife.net/viewthread.php?tid=31543&highlight=ericeia for details. Ericeia is placed in Erebidae, Erebinae (ex Noctuidae, Catocalinae, but see Lafontaine & Schmidt (2010) ZooKeys 40 for the latest instalment of Noctuoid classification).
The second species (photo, right) is possibly an Ostrinia species, though this genus belongs to a large complex of spilomeline genera in the Crambidae.
