September 2010. A beetle common in south Viet Nam was sent for identification. They are reared as a food for birds. The larva and the adult all feed on rice, corn, grain, etc. According to the picture, their length is about 6 mm.
It was identified by the Australian Museum as a tenebrionid, closely related to Tenebrio, the common mealworm. (See e.g., http://www.hcmealworm.com/). A member thought it was the European mealworm beetle (Tenebrio molitor L.). It was first found in Vietnam at the end of 1995. This beetle was illegally imported from China to Vietnam.
