Cimex sp. bedbug

November 2007. An insect found in a hotel room in Samoa. Not a pest of plants, but one of humans.

It was identified as Cimex spp., possibly, the common bedbug, Cimex lectularius, or the tropical bedbug C. hemipterus. It is more likely the latter.

There is excellent information at: http://medent.usyd.edu.au/bedbug/ and also http://www.bedbug.org.au/

The hotel will have to undergo an investigation to see how widespread the infestation is and then engage a pest control company to treat affected rooms – or by thorough spraying with permethrin. This is a difficult pest to control because of insecticide resistance, its cryptic habits and ease of spread with humans traveling internationally. It is spreading rapidly worldwide.
