Gall wasp, Chinese banyan, Hawaii

August 2012. Recently, a new gall wasp was seen on terminal stems of Ficus microcarpa (Chinese Banyan), a tree used in landscaping of the East West Center grounds near UH Manoa, Oahu. The banyan tree did not appear healthy. Many galls were present on the terminal stems and there were emergence holes. After removing all leaves, the denuded stems were placed in a jar to see what would emerge. The next day, agaonid wasps, larger than the banyan leaf gall wasp, Josephiella microcarpae, emerged. Specimens are being sent to Jean-Yves Rasplus for identification.

Later, in November 2012 a description of the gall wasp was sent by Dr Bernarr Kumashira, see attachment.
