September 2015. A post from Clemson University on the biocontrol of Clidemia hirta caused some interest (see below). Present research is focusing on nematodes; one particular species (Ditylenchus gallaeformans) is being collected from different parts of the plant’s native range. In Fiji, it is called ‘Kaurasiga’ and ‘Daunisiga’; it has medicinal value. There are reports that it was accidentally introduced in the late 1800s by Koster. And a control using thrips from Trinidad was introduced in early 1900s (1930s?). Wikipedia suggests that Koster introduced the seeds along with coffee plants. However, a paper by Neal Evenhuis suggests that he was the wrong man, and culprit may have been William Fillingham Parr. Read Neal Evenhuis’ account (below). Origin: |
