?Blossom end rot

October 2008. Damage on eggplant reported from Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia.

It was suggested that the damage to the tip of the fruit was blossom end rot that has been colonised by other fungi. Blossom end rot is common in many Solanaceae and is normally the result of prolonged water stress during fruit developement. The lighter fruit in the front is not so clear, but maybe the result of physical injury to very young fruit and subsequent corky scarring. It needs microscopic examination to confirm.

It was thought unlikely that it was blossom end rot as Pohnpei has high rainfall.
