Salac, Nodocnemis sp., Indonesia

June 2008. Weevil pollinators of Salacca edulis. The presence of the weevils means that there is no more painful and tedious manual pollinating required. They could have been introduced or native species. Weevil 1 (photo, left) is normally found on Indonesian salak while Weevil 2 (photo, right) is normally found on local salak. Identification was requested.

The weevils were said to believe to the tribe Acalyptini of the subfamily Curculioninae, but I cannot identify them any further from the pictures. This group was recently studied by Hiroaki Kojima in Japan (Kojima H & Morimoto K (2005) Weevils of the tribe Acalyptini (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Curculioninae): redefinition and a taxonomic treatment of the Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese species. Esakia 45: 69–115).

Another member asked if it was Nodocnemis sp., Curculionidae? In the district of Sleman, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, a major production area of salak, there are plenty of these insects.
