Microrytes sp., sugarcane, Vietnam

May 2015. An identification of the beetle attacking sugarcane was requested. It was Tay Ninh Province, South Vietnam, on the border with Cambodia.

A member wrote that it is a Heteronychus species belonging to Dynastidae, but another from Japan said that it was not. The well punctured pronotum suggests it belongs to the genus Microryctes Arrow, 1908. It is difficult to identify the species with the photos provided. There are 4-5 species described from Southeast Asia.

Another suggestion was that it was Papuana beetle, but that was rejected.

Later, Vietnam said that after checking all the specimens in their collection, it was a black beetle (Allissonotum impressicolle Arr., Scarabaeidae, Coleoptera); it was recorded in Vietnam from the first survey in 1967-1968. However, this, too, was rejected as a member had seen specimens of A. impressicolle collected in Taiwan and Japan and it was much larger than the one send to Pestnet.

The id remained unresolved.
