Coffee berry borer, survey and control, FSM

March 2016. There is interest in FSM (Federated States of Micronesia) to grow coffee. A problem is that the country has the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei. It was reported in 1997. A survey is needed. What methods to use, and are there any effective control measures? Also, it was asked if there are alternative hosts.

In response, a member suggested looking at the methods of control in PAN International’s recent book on agroecology, because it contains a good section on managing coffee berry borer. Here and also below:

Stephanie Williamson from PAN UK carried out a project in Central America and Colombia replacing endosulfan in CBB management.

The host list from the University of Hawaii was also provided (see below). It was also pointed out that coffee berry borer was reported from Pohnpei and Saipan in Insects of Micronesia 18(1) (under the synonym Stephanoderes hampei) based on specimens collected in the 1940s and 1950s. The 1997 SPC report is probably based on these records.

Another member suggested that to survey for the coffee berry borer, run a few CBB traps baited with methanol/ethanol to see if it is still there. When CBB first became a problem in Hawaii, a CBB trap was put out on Guam for a couple of months. It did not catch any CBB, but it did catch seven other species of bark beetles, three of which were new island records. Remarkable results from a single trap at a single location!

The workshops held by Dr Luis Aristizabal in Hawaii were also mentioned (see below). There is a video about the workshops and control strategy here: http://kohalacenter.org/business/hawaii-coffee-berry-borer.
