June 2005. A scale insect from a one-year-old longan seedling (Euphoria longana) growing in Samoa was sent for identification.
It was thoguht to be a Ceroplastes wax scale (Coccoidea), possibily C rubens; the poor state of the photos makes it difficult to be certain. The pink wax scale, C rubens, was also found on mango during a recent survey; it is the indirect cause a sooty mould growth. It is probably kept in check by parasitoids.
