Guava, fruit rot, Trinidad

October 2017. From Trinidad photos of a surface damaged guava fruit. There is a dark brown “scarring” and “corky” appearance to the fruit in some parts, and the fruits were said to have had superficial external insect damage. Is there any indication of cause?

A member (moderator) wrote: The insect shown looks similar to a fly larva but the damage is not typical of fruit fly. It looks more like scratching or rubbing damage. Were the fruit touching each other or covered closely by leaves? If the insect shown is causing the damage then I suggest it is hiding in the moist conditions between touching fruit or under leaves and there is a need to open up the canopy and thin out the fruit. Several other insects could cause the scratching damage, inspect the fruit in the early evening or night to see if you can see anything of interest.
