Lymantriid, oil palm, Solomon Is

May 2010. The Lymantriid in the photo was found attacking oil palm in Solomon Islands. Adults were not available, but from the characteristics of the caterpillar it was thought to be Dasychira, Orgyia, or another.

As the picture was of low resolution, characteristics that are needed for identification were hard to see. One member wrote: ???The caterpillar has a pair of forward directed dark tufts on T1 (upper left in the picture), dorsal tufts on A1-A4, but it is not possible to see if there is a posterior-directed tuft on the rear of the body, but there could be. That combination of characters would fit Orgyia, Laelia and probably other genera, but Orgyia is the most likely. This arrangement of tufts does not match Dasychira, Euproctis, Lymantria, etc.???

Another member thought it was Dasychera mendosa, commonly seen feeding on nursery and young plants of oil palm in India.
