December 2002. A pest of the fruit of Abelmoschus manihot (aibeca, bele or slippery cabbage) in the Pacific region. This photo was sent from Cook Islands and identified as Oxycarenus luctuosus) (Hemiptera: Lygaeidae), Cottonseed bug. They normally feeds on cotton bolls, Kenaf and Okra, multiplying very fast during hot and dry weather periods. Nymphs are red and they occur in clusters. |
