It was identified as Brachyplatys sp., a member of the plataspidae. They are really smelly and this may be the reason for the kids’ aversion – it won’t be the cause of the biting. The biting may be the bed bug (Cimex) which has the same smell, and could be in the school buildings or their homes. It was suggested that as some people are averse to admitting to having bed bugs in their house, a doctor should be asked to look at the bites. Brachyplatys should also occur on other plants such as legumes.
