Auguat 2001. A weed from Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia, identified as either Caesalpinia bonduc (grey nicker) or Caesalpinia major (yellow nicker). They are closely related and there is need to examine the stipules to differentiate between them. Caesalpinia bonduc was recorded on Chuuk in April 2000.

These species are generally regarded as being native throughout the tropics, including the Pacific Islands. The seeds float in sea water, and Caesalpinia bonduc holds the “record” for long distance dispersal with a viable seed having been found on a beach in Spitsbergen in the Arctic Ocean. Seeds can be found along the strandline of beaches throughout the tropics and are long-lived. They can be very attractive (e.g. grey with faint brown stripes) and are sometimes used as “checkers” in board games.
