November 2006. About 35 years ago a member found a Stachystarpheta species in Samoa, and more recently in American Samoa. It appears that the same species is now in Tahiti, as evidenced by the attached photos of a plant from there.
It differs from S. cayennensis (=S. urticaefolia) by its larger, more spreading, shrubby form, smaller, mostly white flowers and drooping, rather than suberect, spikes. It differs from S. jamaicensis most obviously by size and leaf shape, and from S. australis by the thicker (?)drooping spikes.
The identification was requested and to know if there were any other localities in the Pacific islands. |
