| June 2005. A name for the vine found in Samoa was requested. It is not common, and some Samoans say that it can cause cancer. What is it?
There are two possibilites:
1. The plant belongs to the Bignoniaceae family commonly referred to as the Catalpa family. The plant can either be Mansoa hymenaea, commonly called “garlic vine” – if crushed fresh leaves have a garlic smell.
2. Another possibility is that its Saritaea magnifica.
Synonyms include: Cydista aequinoctialis and Mansoa alliacea. This was once a common ornamental vine in Palau, but very few people seem to plant it now.
Later, it was reported to have a garlic smell, which is considered to positively identify Mansoa hymenaea.
