October 2000. Cliean guava (Ugni molinae) is being considered for eradication in the Chatham Islands. As it was a similar task to another weed, Piper auritum, under eradication in Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia, methods were exchanged.
In Pohnpei, triclopyr (2,4-D) and imazapyr (Garlon 3A) were used. Stems were cut and 2 ml 2,4-D or Garlon 3A painted onto the stems. For small plants foliar application we used. In all, the results were good.
There is a similar problem with Psidium guava in the Galapagos Islands, where the trees are being cut down, windrowed and burnt. Contact the Charles Darwin Research Institute on Santa Cruz for details.
