Mango seed weevil

March 2009. Vietnam asked if there was a pheromone trap for the mango seed weevil, and, if there was, would like details.

Queensland DPI reponded saying that no pheromone has yet been identified for mango seed weevil, but the organisation has a chemical ecologist in Brisbane working on finding one; but there is nothing significant to report as yet. All the material collected to date (from males, females, males and females and frass) by SPME sampling has revealed various mango-associated compounds as the major peaks in the GC profiles. It is not known whether these compounds are sequestered by the weevils and used for attraction purposes, or whether there are still undetermined minor peaks which could be pheromones. Hopefully it will be resolved before too long.
