| September 2005. Leaves of a local spinach, also commonly called poi kalaloo or malaba spinach (Basella alba or B ruba) growing in coastal Guyana. The spots are characteristic of herbicide burn, but no chemicals were sprayed. The spots appear on the leaf, and on the stem, and after some time the leaf dries and rots. The disease spreads quickly on the farm rendering the plants unsaleable.
Members did not know the cause, but other than fungal infections, thrips were suggested; this was based on damage done to sweet potato by thrips, which can cause extensive damage. One quick way is to drop the buds into ethanol, shake well and look at the residue washed from the leaves under at least x20 magnification.
