June 2012. Do cetonids attack noni fruits, Morinda citrifolia? A member from PNG asked for any information or experiences about cetonid beetles. Generally, cetonids are pollinators, but a can they attack noni fruits and cause a scaring?
A taxonomist from Japan wrote that there are two species of cetoniinae in the photo above:
One is Protaetia (Heteroprotaetia) fusca (one individual above) and the other is Protaetia (Netociomima) sp. near papuana(the remaining 3 individuals).
P. fusca has a wide distribution from Southeast Asia to East Asia and islands in the Pacific. Normally, they feed on fermented plant sap or fruit, but they may enlarge a wound on plant stem or fruit if there is a fermented part on it.
